Combining Chickens

People ask me all the time if I kill/process the chickens and my answer is NO, my husband VERY HUMANELY handles this BUT this morning I discovered a dead chick and the per usual this little hens death is on me. We have/had 19 chicks that we hatched in an incubator and as I stated earlier I caused the death of about 7 chicks from opening the incubator too much. Now we have all the "incubator" chicks in a pen within the chicken yard as well as Swimmy and Sammy the 2 chicks that one of our hens hatched a month prior to the others. They are in a separate pen within the yard as well. I placed one of those plastic dog houses in the pen with the 19 chicks so at night they all snuggle up in the house and all is well BUT chicks grow and they grow fast. I failed to use my little brain on this matter and the chicks have quickly out grown the dog house but they all still try to squash in it and one did not make it through the night. Needless to say the dog house is OUT. I buried the little hen (of coarse it couldn't have been a rooster) and have packed my bag for a LONG GUILT TRIP. I am TIRED OF LEARNING EXPERINCES especially when it comes to somethings life. After burying the little chick I decided Swimmy and Sammy, now 2 months, are ready to be let out into the pen with the big girls and Gator (our rooster). Not really sure if this is a good idea but if I have learned one thing it is this. When it comes to to raising livestock and farming you can only read so much. It's best to just DO. Every animal and situation is different and it's great to get your barings by reading but YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY. So far so good. everyone is just doing their own thing. I edit photos for ahwile then go check on the chickens then edit. REALLY GETTING A LOT ACCOMPLISHED TODAY. :O) Just checked again. They've been lose for about an hour and everyone is doing OK.
